Recently Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. celebrated having achieved its Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction target, well ahead of schedule. In recognition of this achievement, Crawford has been presented with the Regional Carbon Initiative Achievement Award (Bronze) from Sustainable Waterloo Region!
This specific sustainability effort began in January 2013, when Crawford Canada became a Bronze Pledging Partner of the Regional Carbon Initiative (RCI), and committed to reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 percent by 2023. Joining RCI was a huge turning point for Crawford Canada, as it provided the company with a wide range of tools and resources to push forward with its green initiatives. Leveraging available resources, Crawford engaged in an internal energy audit. Many of the recommendations brought forth from the audit results were adopted, serving to assist Crawford in reducing its GHG emissions in the Waterloo region and reinforcing the organization’s support for sustainable initiatives. Crawford’s dedication to this initiative was further exemplified by becoming a member of Travelwise in 2014, an organization that promotes responsible commuting.
Achieving this goal in such a short time is no small feat and could not have been accomplished without the help of Crawford’s Green Team, a Canadian group that has been working on sustainability initiatives for six years.
In 2009 a number of Canadian employees helped initiate Project Green, designed to minimize Crawford’s impact on the environment and reduce corporate expenses by maximizing resources. In its first year Project Green successfully completed 17 initiatives. In 2012 members of the Green Team were rejuvenated as GREENSHIFT, with the goal of shifting the way Crawford Canada and its employees think about sustainability.
This team is composed of a group of dedicated employees who have volunteered their time to reducing Crawford’s impact on the environment through implementing new strategic corporate actions, planning events, writing blog posts, and coordinating sustainable projects.
Some of these projects include:
- Making head office building improvements that have saved more than 13.85 tons of GHG emissions, including replacement of an inefficient boiler.
- Implementing consistent computer power-saving settings that reduced energy usage from 0.6W/ft2 to 0.5W/ft2.
As a result of their success partnering with RCI, Crawford’s Green Team has received the support of its Canadian executive leadership team to increase its pledge. The team has set a new target to reduce Canadian GHG emissions 40 percent by 2020!
“Crawford’s achievement and renewed commitment gets at the heart of what the Regional Carbon Initiative is all about. Supporting organizations from all sectors in our community to make and maintain ambitious but realistic GHG reduction commitments,” said RCI Program Manager, Matthew Day. “We look forward to continue working together with Crawford to build on the sustainable success they have achieved.”
