A hurricane warning has been issued for the Big Island of Hawaii as Hurricane Iselle sets its sights on America’s 50th state. Roughly 400 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, the hurricane is moving quickly and is expected to continue to take Iselle on a west-northwest track over the next few days. As Iselle looms, the governor of Hawaii has issued an emergency proclamation. Iselle, the third-strongest tropical cyclone of 2014 in the Eastern Pacific basin, is predicted to pass near or over the Big Island of Hawaii as a hurricane late Thursday night into early Friday morning local time, then track to the south of the rest of the islands as a strong tropical storm Friday. Iselle will bring bands of heavy rain, flash flooding, high surf and strong wind gusts to parts of Hawaii, including the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. Residents have been warned to expect downed trees, power outages and structural damage. All of the Islands should expect heavy rainfall and possible coastal flooding.
After Iselle, Hawaii could eventually feel the effects of Hurricane Julio this weekend, which is following about 900 miles behind Iselle. Julio has strengthened into a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. Some additional strengthening over the next day or so is possible as it moves to the west-northwest. Though the exact path of Julio is uncertain at this time, the majority of forecast guidance keeps the center of Julio north of the islands as a tropical storm this weekend, but that could change.
