How do you improve an emerging leader’s knowledge, networking savvy and perspective of an organization? The answer is mentoring. By identifying learning goals, leveraging relationships, encouraging active participation and measuring results, a mentoring program can provide a solution no classroom can deliver. As a global organization with a broad suite of services, Crawford recognizes the importance of developing and managing current and future employees, which is why we are pleased to work with the Lloyd’s Claims Graduate Program.
Lloyd’s decided to invest in new claims talent for the Lloyd’s & London Market as part of the Lloyd’s Market Strategic Claims Review in 2008, which soon became known as the Claims Transformation Program. One of the eight work streams identified as part of the project was the initiation of a claims talent development program. Thus, the Lloyd’s Claims Graduate Program was born.
The program, which spans the course of one year, is designed to prepare the participant for a career as a claims adjuster in the market. Program participants experience two placements and three job shadowing experiences to help understand the claims process from several different areas of insurance.
Typical Program Layout
- A three-week placement with the Lloyd’s Corporation Claims team
- A three-week placement with solicitors
- A three-week placement with Crawford & Company
- A two-and-a-half month placement at a broking house within the claims team
- A six-month placement with a managing agent within the claims team
Crawford U.K. was asked to get involved with the program in 2011, with the goal of giving the participants an in-depth understanding of the role of the loss adjuster, how a loss adjuster handles a wide range of claims and how they interact with the Lloyd’s Market. Crawford created a three-week program that included extensive presentations detailing the role of a loss adjuster, which were complemented by on-site visits with our property adjusters.
Over the years we refined the program to include class-specific presentations, case reviews and site visits from our Aviation, Marine, Construction and Subsidence specialists. Not only is this a great chance for the graduates to gain first-hand experience on high profile losses, but it gives Crawford a chance to showcase its specialties in these business classes to people who may be potential clients. Crawford has received consistently complimentary feedback from the graduates, who all find their three-week stints with us to be enjoyable and educational. Since 2011, Crawford has hosted more than 20 Lloyd’s graduates, 19 of whom now have positions within various Lloyd’s managing agents in the market.
